Det. Sgt. Steve Ryan says the victim — identified as Shmar Parris, 25, who social media messages of condolence said also went by the name Murda Marz, a rapper who several videos posted on YouTube — was known to police and the overnight shooting is believed to be a targeted attack.
Ryan says a light-coloured SUV was seen driving erratically away from the scene but there are no details on any suspects or how many may be involved.
Police say Parris was pronounced dead in hospital Friday after being found slumped in the driver’s seat of the car with multiple gunshot wounds in Cabbagetown, near Carlton Street and Parliament Street.
Officers went to an area near Mutual Street and Gould Street at about 2:30 a.m., for reports of gunshots, but while on the way they were called to a collision a few blocks away involving a car that had crashed into a pole.
The victim was found in his bullet-riddled car at the collision scene.
Murda Marz’ Twitter profile said he was from Nova Scotia and Toronto; messages of condolence posted on Twitter and Instagram said he was “a good person who always made everyone laugh.”
“Street N****,”a video posted on YouTube, was captioned as being “murda marz in north preston nova scotia” and featured him in front of Tasty Pizza in Darthmouth, Nova Scotia, rapping of “the clubs at night, man all them pretty ladies” and saying “if I’m not on the road I’m in the p-e-n.” It included a “shoutout to all my peoples” in North Preston, Nova Scotia. and had numerous “RIP” comments posted afterwards.

Ryan says a female passenger in the victim’s car suffered a gunshot wound to her upper body and took a taxi to hospital where she was treated. He says a male passenger was also in the vehicle but was not injured.
Ryan says it’s believed numerous shots were fired as one vehicle chased the other and that the chase ended at the crash scene blocks away.
“It’s a brazen attack,” Ryan said. “Shooting at a moving vehicle is gutsy and stupid, actually.”
While Ryan did not give details of how Parris was known to police he said he could be considered to have a high-risk criminal lifestyle.
